On 28 January, the Federal Council appointed Professor Tanja Zimmermann to a further four-year term as director of the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa). This term will run from 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2030.
The ETH Board was gratified to note that more than half of the newly appointed professors were women. This means that the two Federal Institutes of Technology are on course to achieve the long-term goal of increasing the proportion of women professors.
The ETH Board appointed a total of seven women and eleven men as professors and awarded the title of professor to seven individuals. It also took note of the resignations of nine professors (two women and seven men) and thanked them for their services.
Together, the ERI sector institutions are launching the Swiss National Science Advice Network. In doing so, they are implementing a decision by the Federal Council and the cooperation agreement made with it.
The ETH Board has appointed Professor Eftychia Vayena to be a member of the Executive Board of ETH Zurich. In relation to the organisational development project “FIT for the Future”, it also took note of an alternative proposal from the research institutes, which it has asked them to develop further.
The ETH Board appointed ten women and nine men as professors and awarded the title of professor to one individual and the title of Professor of Practice to one individual. It also took note of the resignation of two professors and thanked them for their services.
At its meeting of 9/10 July 2025, the ETH Board took note of the resignation of Vanessa Wood as Vice President of ETH Zurich. She will leave the Executive Board at the end of December 2025 and will continue to lead her research team.
On 6 June the Federal Council appointed Martin Keller and Matthias Leuenberger to the ETH Board. Martin Keller will take office on 1 August, succeeding Christiane Leister, who passed away at the beginning of March. From 1 January 2026 Matthias Leuenberger will succeed Susan Gasser, whose term of office comes to an end in December.
Upon application of the President of EPFL, Prof. Anna Fontcuberta, the ETH Board is appointing Dr Adrian Wägli as a new member of the Executive Board. He will thus succeed Matthias Gäumann and will take over the Vice Presidency for Operations (VPO) from 1 December 2025.
