Susan Gasser studied biology and biophysics at the University of Chicago and obtained a doctorate at the University of Basel. She was group leader at the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC) at EPFL from 1986 until she was appointed full professor at the University of Geneva in 2001. From November 2004 until February 2019, Susan Gasser was Director of the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Bio-medical Research (FMI) in Basel. She has been as well full professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Basel since 2005, and Guest professor at the University of Lausanne since 2021. In February 2021, she took over the role of Director of the ISREC Foundation and AGORA research center. Susan Gasser chairs the Scientific Advisory Board of the health centers of the Helmholtz Association, and is an advisory board member of the Francis Crick Institute in London and of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. From 2014 to 2019, she chaired the Equal Opportunities Commission of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
