Tuition fees for foreign nationals who move to Switzerland to study to be tripled

At its meeting on 10-11 July 2024, the ETH Board approved a threefold increase in tuition fees for foreign Bachelor's and Master's degree students who move to Switzerland to study at ETH Zurich or EPFL. It is thus taking account of the clearly expressed positions and votes on this topic in Parliament. In the organisational development project "FIT for the Future", which has been ongoing for two years, the ETH Board approved the documents for an internal pre-consultation within the ETH Domain, the results of which will constitute one of the bases for decisions in principle to be taken at the end of 2024.

Tuition fees for foreign-educated foreign nationals to be tripled

The ETH Board intends to triple tuition fees for foreign nationals who move to Switzerland to study. By increasing the tuition fees it is taking account of the Federal Parliament’s clearly expressed will, and is proposing a solution that can be implemented quickly. The decision by the ETH Board in March not to implement an increase was based on the significance of internationalism and the ability to attract the best talents, and these remain key aspects for the ETH Board. Accompanying measures will still enable highly talented but financially weak international students to study at one of the Federal Institutes of Technology. To avoid revenue from tuition fees being further eroded by inflation, the ETH Board is also proposing that all tuition fees be linked to the Swiss consumer price index. These measures will help to ensure that the ETH Domain can maintain its high quality of teaching. The threefold increase in tuition fees is set to be introduced as of the autumn semester 2025. Under a transitional provision, already enrolled students will be able to complete their Bachelor’s or Master’s studies without any increase in tuition fees. The ETH Board will soon conduct a consultation procedure within the ETH Domain as well as with the federal offices. On that basis it will take a final decision at its meeting on 4-5 December 2024.

FIT for the Future: organisational development of the ETH Domain

As part of the project “FIT for the future: organisational development of the ETH Domain“, the ETH Board and the six institutions of the ETH Domain have jointly defined eight goals to be reached. With a view to its decision in principle at the end of 2024, the ETH Board will conduct an internal pre-consultation among the institutions of the ETH Domain including the internal bodies that are entitled to participate. The President of the ETH Board plans to visit the institutions after the consultation documents have been sent in order to inform them on the next steps and to discuss content-related issues. The results will be summarised in a consolidated short report based on the feedback from the institutions of the ETH Domain. The ETH Board will then take forward-looking decisions in principle regarding the processes, organisation and structure of the ETH Domain.
