Hengartner \u00e8 stato rettore dell\u2019Universit\u00e0 di Zurigo (UZH). Dal 2016 fino al suo ritiro dalla mansione di Rettore dell\u2019Universit\u00e0 di Zurigo \u00e8 stato anche presidente di swissuniversities. Michael O. Hengartner ha la doppia cittadinanza svizzero-canadese. \u00c8 cresciuto a Qu\u00e9bec City, dove ha studiato biochimica presso l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Laval. Nel 1994 ha conseguito il dottorato presso il Massachusetts Institute of Technology nel laboratorio del premio Nobel per la medicina H. Robert Horvitz. Successivamente, fino al 2001, ha guidato un gruppo di ricerca presso il Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory negli Stati Uniti. Nel 2001 gli \u00e8 stata assegnata la nuova cattedra finanziata dalla fondazione Ernst Hadron presso l\u2019Istituto per la biologia molecolare dell\u2019UZH. Dal 2009 al 2014 \u00e8 stato Decano presso la Facolt\u00e0 di scienze naturali e matematica dell\u2019UZH.<\/p>\n<p>Michael O. Hengartner ha conseguito un Executive MBA presso l\u2019IMD di Losanna ed \u00e8 stato insignito di numerosi riconoscimenti per la sua rivoluzionaria ricerca sulla base molecolare dell\u2019apoptosi e nel 2006 ha ricevuto il premio nazionale Latsis. Nel 2010 gli \u00e8 stato conferito il premio come miglior insegnante (Credit Suisse Award for Best Teaching) dell\u2019Universit\u00e0 di Zurigo. Nel 2016 Michael O. Hengartner \u00e8 stato nominato Dottore honoris causa dall\u2019Universit\u00e0 La Sorbona.
