This should ensure that the ETH Domain is better equipped for the urgent challenges now facing it as well as those that lie further ahead. The aim is to create a system in which the outstanding capacities of the ETH Domain\u2019s institutions can be harnessed to address the big societal challenges of our time.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d7d571 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4d7d571\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Last updated on 6 March 2026<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd2b443 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dd2b443\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Switzerland faces major challenges. The ETH Domain therefore needs to be organised in a way that makes it as agile and flexible as possible, in order to swiftly address major new issues such as digitalisation, artificial intelligence, health, energy and the environment. Adapting the organisation and structure of the ETH Domain in a future-oriented way is intended to strengthen cooperation between the institutions, exploit synergies and avoid administrative obstacles. It will also enable partners from the areas of business, science and administration to access the institutions of the ETH\u00a0Domain more easily, and will strengthen collaboration with them.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-79ce552 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"79ce552\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4>Project progress and next steps<\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-629f04e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"629f04e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The FIT for the Future project is now in its second phase \u2013 the design phase \u2013 that mainly involves fleshing out the specifics of the project. The ETH Board is seeking to achieve closer cooperation and enhanced coordination in the ETH Domain. In future, the ETH Domain is expected to consist of three strong strategic pillars: ETH Zurich, EPFL, and the four research institutes under one roof.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of 2024, the ETH Board and the institutions of the ETH Domain jointly agreed on <a href=\"https:\/\/ethrat.ch\/en\/eth-domain\/objectives-of-fit-for-the-future-and-decision-in-principle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">objectives for a future-proof organisation and structure in the ETH Domain<\/a>. On this basis, they developed two model versions for the implementation of these objectives. The two versions differ mainly in the degree to which the four research institutes are integrated.<\/p>\n<p>In the proposal with the working title \u201cSwiss National Labs\u201d, the research institutes retain their legal personalities. By contrast, in the version with the working title \u201cSwiss National Lab\u201d, the four research institutes are merged into a single legal entity. In both versions, the research institutes acquire a new collective image under one roof, retaining their names, logos\/brands and locations.<\/p>\n<p>The ETH Board discussed the two versions at its meeting of 4\/5 March 2026 and decided to put both forward for internal consultation within the ETH Domain. This will begin after the ETH Board meeting and continue until the start of June. The ETH Board will evaluate the feedback and take it into account before making a decision on the next steps, probably in the second half of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The ETH Board is continuing to hold talks with various stakeholders. In addition to political bodies, these include partner organisations of the research institutes and both ETH, industry federations, the cantons in which the sites are located, and public authorities. Before the ETH Board reaches a decision on which solution it wishes to propose to the Federal Council for implementation, it will conduct a consultation within the ETH Domain as well as with the federal offices.
